Dear Parents:
We all know that many coaches could be better at planning and utilizing team practice time. But let’s make sure that we are clear about something, your athlete’s development is not just about them. In fact, they are only a small part. Blaming them for your athlete’s lack of production, is a huge mistake. Before second-guessing your athlete’s coach, answer the following questions:
• How much does your athlete love their sport?
• How much time do they spend daily/weekly practicing sports?
• How do they behave when they are with their team and things are not going well?
• Are they good teammates?
• How focused are they?
• Are they able to apply what they learn (aptitude)?
• Are they in the right situation and level or team for their level of ability?
• Do they take responsibility for their mistakes or do they have a habit of blaming and making excuses?
Parents, YOU are a major part of their development. Great coaches can make a huge difference to their players, BUT it’s only temporary. Your expectations must be realistic and an understanding of the requirements or growth required. Check your athlete’s habits before doing anything else. If they do their part, be careful about looking elsewhere for excuses before looking at home first.
