Imagine this: you get off Orlando International Airport and Your Disney World vacation has officially begun! This article will help you determine exactly how to plan your arrival day at Walt Disney World, including the ins and outs of arriving at the hotel, how to actually get onto Disney World property, and how to plan the rest of your day.

While at Walt Disney World, your time is money. It’s important that you don’t waste a single moment when you visit. At the same time, you don’t want to feel overwhelmed from the start. That’s why I gathered the following information for helping you plan your first day at Walt Disney World in 2026.
Arrive from Orlando International Airport
If you’re flying into Orlando International Airport, you have several options when looking for ground transportation to get you to your hotel. If you are staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel, and NOT renting a car, You have two main ground transportation options: shuttle service or taxi/rideshare service.

As of this writing, if you choose a shuttle service, you will most likely consider it My Connection. This service takes guests from Orlando International Airport to their Walt Disney World Resort hotel (you can also book round-trip service for a return trip to the airport at the end of your vacation). Mears Connect provides Service is 24/7 and serves Terminals Main and C at Orlando International Airport.
Mears Connect doesn’t just serve Walt Disney World hotels — they’ll also take guests to a number of select non-Disney resorts. For a complete list of hotels served, you can visit the Mears Connect website. Note that Mears Connect is not a free service. In this article, One-way Standard Service trips on Mears Connect cost $16 per adult and $13 per child. They also offer Express Service which takes you directly to your resort without stopping at additional hotels along the way.

Your second option is to use a taxi or ride-sharing services such as Uber and Lyft. This could be a more cost-effective option depending on how many people are in your travel party (keep Mears prices in mind above). You definitely want to be aware of potential airport surcharges when using ride share services. One of the advantages of booking a taxi or ride share is that you know you will be the driver’s only stop, giving you quicker access to your hotel. To simplify the process even further, you can pre-order an Uber or Lyft before arriving at MCO.

Disney World Resort hotels: check-in basics
You choose the ground transportation option, and you finally arrive at your hotel! For the purposes of this article, I will focus on Disney World hotel policies regarding check-in. If you are staying off-property, be sure to confirm check-in times and other important information with your hotel.

Check-in time is 15.00 for Walt Disney World Resort hotels and 4:00 PM for Disney Deluxe Villas. If you arrive before this time and want to start your holiday as early as possible, You can leave your luggage with Bell Services when you go and play at amusement parks, water parks, Disney Springs, etc. While this is not a guarantee, it is possible that your room will be ready before 3pm. If you want, Your bags can be delivered by Bell Service to your room for your convenience at a later time.

If you just want to spend time in a hotel, be sure to research Disney’s Direct to room service. With this service, you can use the MagicBand or Unlock Door features in the My Disney Experience app to enjoy certain areas of your Disney Resort hotel, such as the pool, on the day of your check-in, even before your room is ready.

Returning in summer 2026: free water park admission on check-in day
To give guests more choices on their check-in day, Disney World is returning a special promotion for summer of 2026. Every guest staying at a Walt Disney World Resort hotel (vacation package or room reservation only) will receive free admission to any of Disney World’s water parks on the day of their arrival and check-in. For guests to qualify for this offer, their name must be included on the room reservation.

As of this writing, Disney has not announced which specific dates this offer will qualify for, but we do know that the promotion will return in the summer. Disney World provides free bus transportation from their resort to the water park. Once you arrive at the hotel, drop your bags with Bell Services (or in your room if you’re ready) and you’re off to the water park!

Disney Springs and resort tourism
If I had to venture a guess, I would say that most guests head to Disney Springs on the day of their arrival and check-in. Disney Springs is a shopping and dining area at Walt Disney World that you can visit for free — that’s it it’s a great way to do something without paying for a full day at a theme park (and not necessarily getting a full day at the park).

There is a lot to see and do at Disney Springs, and rightly so a great place to have dinner on your first night at Disney World. This is also a good way to make your vacation easier so that your check-in day can be more relaxed.

Like a water park, Free bus transportation is available from your Disney World resort to Disney Springs. If you choose to visit Disney Springs on the day of your arrival, I recommend making Advance Dining Reservations at restaurants, because many tend to fill up.

Another option you can consider is Resort Leap. It’s a fun way to get around and check out the various resort hotels at Walt Disney World, eat, and get into vacation mode.

Like Disney Springs, I recommend making Advance Dining Reservations if you know where you want to eat. Getting from your hotel to another Disney World hotel can be a little tricky and may involve several transportation options, depending on where you want to go. If your flight is delayed, you can contact the restaurant and inform them of your situation to avoid being charged a no-show fee.

Visit the Disney World theme park
If you’re really feeling adventurous and have some free time, you can spend a day at the theme park on the day of your arrival and check-in. Generally, the earlier your flight lands in the MCO, the more it makes sense to try to spend a day at the park, especially if your holiday is short (I would say 3 nights or less).

In this case, you have several options. If you rent a car, you can drive directly to the theme park from Orlando International Airport and check into your hotel that evening. If you don’t have a car, you’ll need to get to your resort hotel first then take Disney World transportation to the amusement park.

Keep that in mind adding a day to your Disney World theme park ticket can be expensive, so look at your flight times and assess whether it’s worth the extra cost. If you’re only arriving in the afternoon or evening, the extra money spent on a park day may not be worth it. However, depending on how many days are on your park ticket, the cost of adding a fifth, sixth, or seventh day is negligible.

I’m still a little hesitant to add a theme park day to my check-in days if your flight is significantly delayed or cancelled. Even though it’s unlikely, I don’t want to lose the money spent on that extra day. Talk to your travel party and find out what’s best for your travel plans!

How to make the most of your Disney World arrival day
If you want to hit the ground running on your first day at Walt Disney World, there are a few tips you need to keep in mind:
- Consider the most efficient ground transportation methods. This could mean pre-order Uber or Lyft upon arrival at MCO, or it could also mean looking inward Mears Connect Express Services. Standard Service on Mears Connect can mean waiting in a longer line for the shuttle to arrive, and once on the plane, you may have to make several stops before reaching your resort hotel.
- Make sure you activate Disney Direct-to-Room service with your Magic Band and My Disney Experience app. This will allow you to access resort amenities such as the pool on the day of check-in before your room is ready.
- Pack a change of clothes, swimwear, etc. in your carry-on bag so you can take advantage of the resort’s pool or free Disney World water park admission. This way you don’t have to worry about misplacing your checked baggage.
- Book an Advance Dining Reservation for your first dinner. Whether you’re visiting Disney Springs or a resort hotel, it’s a good idea to jot something down so you can start your vacation off with a bang. I recommend ordering something at least three (3) hours after your flight lands to allow travel to your hotel, check in, and arrive at your restaurant.
I hope this article helps you navigate your arrival and check-in day at Walt Disney World! The first day of vacation is exciting, but I don’t want you to get too carried away and overcommit once it arrives. Stay tuned for more Walt Disney World vacation tips!
