I began my journey of Rotaract as a new scholar, without really knowing what Rotaract is or what is part of the club involved. What I know is that many people talk about it, so out of curiosity, I registered. However, for the first half of this year, I was not involved in anything. I kept asking about what the club did and whether joining would affect my academics or increase extra stress.
Then, towards the end of my first year, something unexpected occurred, I was added to the group’s chat Fundraising Team 1. Someone reached out to me and asked if I could join the fundraising activity. Without knowing much, I answered yes. So, my first task is to raise funds in the regions which include Borella, Maradana, and the nearest environment. I went with a group of students in the second and third year, there was nothing I knew. Even though I was a little nervous at first, that day turned out to be one of the most pleasant and memorable moments in my university’s life. I made a new friendship, had a great conversation, and finally began to understand what Rotaract really was. During this activity I learned we raised funds for the project called Rotarallia One of the biggest music concerts organized by the club. I feel very happy and proud to be a part of it, even as a first year student. That day marked the actual beginning of my Rotaract journey, and with that, it marked the end of my first year as Rotaractors.
When my second year began, I re -register for the Rotaract Club, this time with a clear intention to get involved from the start. And I do it! I participated in some extraordinary projects that helped me grow personally and as a team player. One of the most excited and unforgettable events that I followed was “Holi Hai” and that was my first Holi celebration. Color, excitement, energy is truly extraordinary experience. I also get privileges to contribute to the projects that are meaningful and have an impact like “Arambana”, “Color”, ‘Prarthana’, and ‘Apen Gamata’. This initiative has a real effect on the community, and I feel very grateful to be part of them.
One of the most personal and unforgettable highlights of my Rotaract trip was Spotlight 2.0The singing competition organized by SR Avenue. I always like music, but singing is something I keep for myself, usually only songs hum in the bathroom. I always dream of performing on stage, but fear of holding me back. Spotlight 2.0 gave me the opportunity to face that fear. I was chosen as a semi-finalis, and standing on the stage feels like a dream come true. It was a small goal, but achieved it made me very happy and proud.
After all these experiences and memories, I apply for the third time and feel honored to be appointed as Director of Avenue Regional involvement.
My journey as Rotaract began for the third time as the club director for RI in 2024/2025 with a thrilling and adventure leadership camp. One of the most unforgettable memories is during this camp in Kitulgala, where we took part in the rafting. Not only adventure, it is a moment of freedom and courage. I still remember the excitement, laughter, cold splash of river water, and how we cheer each other through every fast. It is important to note that if I am not part of this extraordinary family, I will never have the opportunity to experience such a trip. My parents are always careful and never allowed me to do adventurers, especially those involving water. The only reason they agreed this time was because it was a leadership program held for the club director. They believe it is important, and that the label “leadership” makes all differences. If not for that, I will not have the opportunity to experience something that is so brave and free. That made me realize how Rotaract opened an extraordinary door for personal growth under the leadership and service.
My role as a co-sign of the Avenue Regional Engagement brings his own enriching experience. One of the most meaningful projects I have ever participated in is Edu Bridge Project, where we initiate English courses for students from lack of resource backgrounds. I still remember the faces of curious faces of small children, their hands raised enthusiastically to answer questions, and how their shy smiles gradually turned into laughter. Every bit of their progress, no matter how small, feels like a personal victory. It taught me patience and the true value of consistency and encouragement. Another unforgettable project is Coast Guard, where we organize coastal cleaning and visit the turtle conservation center. We gathered in the morning, armed with gloves, bags, and spirit of service. The sense of friendship that we shared while cleaning the beach, the peaceful voice of the waves, and the magic moment of seeing the turtles at the conservation center was all very special. It reminds me that even the smallest treatment can help protect something wide and beautiful like the ocean.
Then came Jingle Joyland, a project that brought the wonders of the holiday season to the children who needed it the most. We sing songs, play games, and share prizes. A little girl hugged me tightly and whispered, “Thank you for coming.” One time was enough to fill my heart with warmth for months. Seeing joy on their faces, hearing their laughter, and feeling their excitement reminds me of the meaning of service that actually brings light into someone’s life, even if only for a day. Outside the project, one of the most useful aspects of Rotaract is the people. Working with members from various clubs taught me the importance of collaboration, understanding, and joint vision. Everyone brings their own ideas, talents and energy to the table. Are we planning projects, overcoming challenges, or celebrating our success, the support and work of the team that we share makes all efforts really useful.
Rotaract has given me space to challenge myself, to step as a leader, and experience the excitement of giving. It was never just about work-that about laughter during project planning, nighttime brainstorming calls, friendship that was built through services, and in-depth satisfaction even made the smallest difference. Every project has left an eternal sign in my heart, and every memory reminds me why I chose this path. Now, when I brought my Rotaract trip to the close, I looked back with a great gratitude. Everything that I experienced along the way has shaped me into my confidence, loving, and connected version. Joining Rotaract has become one of the most transformative decisions in my life. It gives me space to grow, to serve, lead, and most importantly, to connect – with people, with the community, and with myself. When I move forward, I bring with me not only memories, but values, lessons, and hearts that are full of appreciation. My Rotaract journey has become a beautiful blend of adventure, responsibility, and touching experience that I will appreciate for a lifetime. Even though this chapter ends, the spirit of Rotaract will always live in me.
