I came from a very traditional house where I was never allowed to go anywhere freely. I always want to violate those boundaries, but my parents don’t let me. During my internship, I met an extraordinary friend, RTR. Melisha, former Secretary of Rotaract Club of NIBM. That was the first time I heard the word Rotaract. I asked him, “Akka, what is Rotaract?” And the story he shared really inspired me-especially the journey he had done.
During my first year at university, I was the only one from my department to join Rotaract. I never thought it would be the best decision in my life. I joined many organizing committees. My first project was the 14th installation ceremony and Rota Romp ’23, where I worked as ER Coordinator and Membership Coordinator. I get new friends and feel right -really happy to do what I like.
Then came Peaanam 2023, a project that we did at the University of Peradeniya. That is an extraordinary experience. After that, the interview of the team leader was held, and I applied but I was not elected. It made me a little sad, but I didn’t give up.
Immediately a turning point in my trip: Rotatomorrow 4.0. I was given the opportunity to lead with the Harawuma project, and won many awards at the Rotathomorrow Award ceremony. I am forever thanking me the mentor Dinithi Akka and the leader of the Amali team for trusting me with that role and showed me the potential that I never saw in me.
In January 2024, I got a random call from Pabamini, asking me to join Ignite Sri Lanka to support the clean water. I never imagined that “yes” simple will take me so far. That’s where I found two siblings of soul, Pabamini and Dinanaga. People even call us “Jala Missla.” We travel, meet extraordinary people, and provide the best for this project.
A tight girl and in that house? He is not the same anymore.
Rotaract taught me more than I had imagined. It gives me experience, lessons, and most importantly. I especially like to do social services. And the funniest part? I never told my parents complete details from the trip. Because if I do it, I will not be allowed to leave!
When the year of RI 2023-24 ended, I proposed to the council, not much expecting. I am only a general member among many talented team leaders. But what surprised me, I was chosen to be the executive committee as an assistant secretary, the best thing that had happened to me in Rotaract.
I was given two ways to ignore, public relations and information technology, along with four extraordinary directors, plus club reporting. From Prinue, we completed two projects. Project Influencecia is a large -magnitude success and all credit is given to my extraordinary director Amali and Chamagi Akka. That is more than just technical success. It became a project full of hearts and teamwork.
From IT Avenue, we launched a project that touched the heart, Eduketha, initiative for 10 months with a big impact. I have an extraordinary OC and a beautiful joint chairman. Thank you specifically to Vandana and Gimhan Ayya, and the whole team for his support. We build not only technical projects but also families and culture on the technical road.
When I looked back at my Rotaract journey, my heart was full of gratitude, pride, and a little sadness that ended with this chapter.
I met people from all faculties, shared stories, dancing like no one watched, and traveled on an unforgettable trip. I found my strength, learning beauty giving, and understanding the value of team work and dreams together.
Special thanks to Roshan Ayya, Ayya Vihanga, and Adeesha Ayya for trusting me with the role that I hold.
I have the opportunity to meet people who motivate me, encourage me to be better, and never leave my side. We faced failure, celebrating victory, and most importantly, we grew stronger – together.
The connection we made is not only for the project, they become a friendly friendship. Thank you, Rotaract for giving me a story worth telling.
