Adam’s peak (Sri on) More than just a mountain is a sacred pilgrimage site, natural wonders, and symbols of unity for people from all religions. Every year, thousands of worshipers and tourists travel to their peaks, leaving not only footprints but also greater waste problems. Realizing this challenge, the Rotaract club from the University of Kelaniya, University of Moatuwa, and Uva Wellasa University, Badulla, came together for Green fin (Haritha Firipa), a collaborative initiative aimed at preserving the beauty of the mountain while encouraging fellowship among young leaders.
While the main purpose Green fin Is to fight waste pollution at the top of Adam, this project brings more bonds to strengthen bonds between the Rotaract university club. Students from various academic backgrounds are united under the joint vision of environmental services and conservation. This partnership between universities is not only a means to achieve goals but core goals, maintain future leaders who are committed to collective actions.
The journey begins with the Kelaniya team who departed in the afternoon, then joined members of Moratuwa and Uva Wellassa University when we traveled to the top of Adam. Arriving at night, the teams prepare for climbing last night, departing from the Hatton route. Despite heavy rain, the spirit still was not shaken. Along the way, we found warmth in a small time but meaningful like sharing food and simple, reminder of goodness and unity that defines such pilgrimage.
When the road grew crowded near Idikatupana, the team turned to the less passed to the Rathnapura path, embracing their rough terrain. When dawn, we reached the peak, even though the sunrise remained hidden behind the clouds. Not affected, we took a moment on the platform over Sri Pana to reflect on the spiritual importance of our mission.
After a short break and breakfast, the team started the environmental mission. Divided into groups, we combed the Hatton Trail to the Seetha Gangula, collecting waste that was discarded with unwavering dedication. The garbage collected is then handed over to local authorities for proper disposal, ensuring their efforts have an eternal impact.
Beyond the success of the environment, which really stands out is friendship that is built along the road. Students from various universities, who may never meet the opposite, work side by side, sharing laughter, challenges, and a sense of purpose.
Success Green fin is proof of the power of collaboration. By gathering resources, skills, and desires, three Rotaract clubs reach far more than we can have individually. More importantly, we forge friendship and professional networks that will exceed this project, strengthening the Rotaract movement in Sri Lanka.
Adam’s Peak is a treasure that belongs to all Sri Lanka residents and preserving it requires collective efforts. Green fin Prove that when young leaders unite for a goal, they can create significant changes when building a lifetime connection. When the team came down, we took us not only the mission satisfaction achieved but also the hope that the action would inspire others to protect Sri Lanka’s natural heritage and culture.
This initiative is more than just cleaning is a step towards a greener and more united future. And as long as such collaboration continues, enthusiasm Green fin will live continuously.
