When I first stepped into university life, I did not know that something called Rotaract would be a meaningful part of my trip. Everything began during my first year, when I registered for the Rotaract Club of the University of Kelaniya, did not realize that the official registration period had ended. Fortunately, there is one chance left in Sr Avenue, and without much hesitation, I took it. Simultaneously, I joined the editorial path as my technical path, even though at that time, I had no real ideas about what was happening or where this road would guide me. Because of the weight of academic work, I remained a member of the year that year. But something about Rotaract remains with me – an unpaid call to return.
When the Year of Rotaract 2023-24 arrived, I decided it was time to receive the call seriously. I became an active member, choosing Avenue Club Service as my main road and continued with Avenue’s editorial as my technical avenue. My first project was the Christinzel’23 reunion, where I had the honor of serving as a secretary. It turned out to be a touching project and had an impact which later won the silver award for the most extraordinary club service initiative – inclusiveness and diversity in the 34th Rotaract District Assembly. I also served as Secretary for Peaanam – Vesak Edition, another project that added color and meaning in my Rotaract year.
But the actual turning point from my trip came with Rotatomorrow 4.0. I was chosen as chairman together with Project Apen Gamata, an initiative launched by the Infinity Team (Team 2). This project is close to my heart and aims to provide sustainable access to clean and safe drinking water for the Anamadu community through the installation of a water purification system. What makes it more special is the extraordinary team that I have to work together: RTR RTR. AADIL, RTR Cahaya Our Guide. Chanumi Akki, our dynamic team leader RTR. Delishia, and our Dedicated OC members. Together, we change the vision into reality.
Project Apen Gamata is recognized as the most sustainable project, the 2nd runner-up team and the development of the best partnership in Rotatomorrow 4.0. It was also nominated in the 34th Rotaract District Council under the categories of water, sanitation, and cleanliness. I am very humble to be recognized as the most most arising Rotatomorrow project seat.
When the new Rotaract 2024-25 began, I felt it was time to give more to this community that had given so much to me. I applied for the Board of Directors and was elected as the club’s co-editor for the term 2024-25. With this role emerges a new world of responsibilities and creative challenges but also an extraordinary support system. I got the privilege to work under the gentle guidance of RTR. Sapna, one of the best and most patient senior editors I have ever known. I also received constant support from our former RTR members. Delishia and friendship of my colleague, RTR. Deepna and RTR. Janooshikaa. More than a teammate, they become sister, unrerusted bonds that are formed through the deadline, laughter, and shared desires.
Among the many important things from this term, writing Maze 2.0 holds a special place in my heart. That is our main project Avenue Editorial, and I still don’t believe we did it. It will remain a dream without our trust and encouragement, RTR. Adeesha, and our President, RTR. Ayya Vihanga. Their trust in us gives us the strength to make what is impossible, maybe. None of that will happen without extraordinary OC standing behind us, every step.
I was also given the opportunity to serve as an editor for Career Fair 2025, which was held in collaboration with career guidance units. That is another experience that broaden my horizons and reminds me of the strength of work and team goals.
Looking back, I smiled at the girl who joined Rotaract not knowing a single thing and I felt proud of the person who was me. Rotaract has been more than just a club. This has become my platform for growth, canvas for creativity, and the circle of people who turn into family.
If my first year is about finding my way, and the second is about finding my voice, this year is about being a writer of my own story with Rotaract on my side.
